Surroundings

The Old Parcels Office is excited and pleased to be able to bring together the paintings and three-dimensional work of nine artists from across the Northern region that have in common an interest in our surroundings.

That is perhaps where the similarity ends, as each artist chosen for this show has a different take on our habitat and how it inspires or shapes their creativity.

“Surroundings” includes pieces that reflect or indicate a diverse range of places, from the raw urban to romantic landscape. Some work is made as an emotional or imaginative response to landscape, whilst others portray concerns with environments that reflect difficult times. Here we are taken into interior or intimate situations, or are shown the rewards of a place by those who make natural sculptures or transform found objects.

Whatever the subject matter and content, each artist taking part in “Surroundings” has something intriguing to show us about their concerns, observations and practice. The work is often memorable and well-crafted and we are fortunate and delighted to be able to bring together this group of artists, many of whom have burgeoning national reputations.
